چکیده

From the comparison of the worldwide geomagnetic data with IMP 1 magnetic records obtained in the interplanetary space, it is found that the DP 2 fluctuations, which are thought to be the geomagnetic counterpart of intensity fluctuations of the magnetospheric onvective system, are coherent with variations in the north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field. This coherence is observed irrespective of whether this component is directed northward or southward. Average time delay between the crossing of an interplantary magnetic structure across the nose of the bow shock and the associated magnetic variation on the ground is 7 minutes at the pole and 9 minutes at the midday equator. Applicability of the proposed models of the magnetospheric electric field to this phenomenon is critically examined, and the penetration of the interplanetary electric field into the magnetosphere is suggested as the origin of the DP 2 phenomenon.

Propagation of low frequency geomagnetic field fluctuations in Antarctica: comparison between two polar cap stations

We conduct a statistical analysis of the coherence and phase difference of low frequency geomagnetic fluctuations between two Antarctic stations, Mario Zucchelli Station (geographic coordinates: 74.7 S, 164.1 E; corrected geomagnetic coordinates: 80.0 S, 307.7 E) and Scott Base (geographic coordinates: 77.8 S 166.8 E; corrected geomagnetic coordinates: 80.0 S 326.5 E), both located in the polar...

Geomagnetic field fluctuations during the passage at the Earth’s orbit of the tail of the 15–16 July 2000 ejecta

In this work we present the analysis of the geomagnetic field fluctuations observed at different ground stations (approximately along two latitudinal arrays, separated by several hours in local time) during the passage at the Earth’s orbit of the tail of the 15–16 July 2000 coronal ejecta. The time interval of interest is characterized by northward interplanetary magnetic field conditions and s...

Effects of solar wind magnetosphere coupling recorded at different geomagnetic latitudes: Separation of directly-driven and storage/ release systems

[1] The effect on geomagnetic activity of solar wind speed, compared with that of the strength of the interplanetary magnetic field, differs with geomagnetic latitude. In this study we construct a new index based on monthly standard deviations in the H-component of the geomagnetic field for all geomagnetic latitudes. We demonstrate that for this index the response at auroral regions correlates ...

The Earth's passage of the April 11, 1997 coronal ejecta: geomagnetic ®eld ̄uctuations at high and low latitude during northward interplanetary magnetic ®eld conditions

An analysis of the low frequency geomagnetic ®eld ̄uctuations at an Antarctic (Terra Nova Bay) and a low latitude (L'Aquila, Italy) station during the Earth's passage of a coronal ejecta on April 11, 1997 shows that major solar wind pressure variations were followed at both stations by a high ̄uctuation level. During northward interplanetary magnetic ®eld conditions and when Terra Nova Bay is c...

Polar Cap Magnetic Variations and Their Relationship with the Interplanetary Magnetic Sector Structure

The relationship between polar geomagnetic variations and the polarity of the interplanetary magnetic sectors' has been studied for the quiet year 1965. It is found that during the day hours a system of ionospheric currents encircles the magnetic poles on every day. The current system may extend up to 15 ø from the pole but is strongest at 8ø-10 ø invariant colatitude. The current direction as ...
